Collaboration BaseClear and Leiden University
Mycobics specializes in growth optimisation and screening of antibiotics and enzyme producing micro-organisms. The company is built around technology that is based on research at Leiden University. A new patent application in the area of antibiotics against multi-drug resistant tuberculosis emphasises the direction in which the company is heading. Mycobics is located at the Leiden Bio Science Park.
Bas Reichert speaks enthusiastically about the collaboration that extends further than usual:
Reichert: “As a CEO and co-founder of BaseClear I came into contact with Erik and Gilles. I got very enthusiastic about the idea that was behind this research. Gilles wanted to use his broad knowledge of fundamental research for commercial R&D and wanted to bring innovative technologies to market. Gilles van Wezel adds: “And I like to work on solutions for industrial questions. The interface between fundamental and applied science intrigues me.”
The technology that Mycobics applies is promising. Pilot projects have been completed.
The collaboration between the scientists and the entrepreneur has had an added value for the other company of Reichert, BaseClear. Reichert: “I have a direct point of contact for all my questions concerning Molecular Biology. One phone call will suffice. And if so desired they can think along with us.” Van Wezel: “From an analytical approach the scientist can really make a contribution. You can be an addition to the standard routines. That interaction between science and industry is fascinating.
Bas Reichert would like to give a little insight to his fellow entrepreneurs: “Within the knowledge institutes there are a lot of scientists who can think along with you as an entrepreneur with great enthusiasm. That new approach has great value.”
